Derby weekend. It’s special by anyone’s standards and whether you think the race should be run on a Wednesday or a Saturday becomes irrelevant if you find the winner!
That’s what I’ll be trying to do this weekend, but first we have a cracking Friday card to look forward to headed by the Investec Oaks.
Before we get stuck into the Fillies Classic, let’s take a look at the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes over an extended 1m at 2pm.
The one I like is ODELIZ, who has been banging the door down for a win in better grade but now gets a chance to be back in the winner’s enclosure. She was second in this in 2014.
She travelled really well behind Secret Gesture at York last time, and the drop back in trip will help. Lightning Thunder is a huge danger, but she was poor on her return and needs to prove she has trained on.
There’s a 1m2f handicap at 2.35pm which looks tricky! Mark Johnston’s MASTER OF FINANCE is up 5lb for two defeats at Chester and York but he stays strong and is bang in form so worth a look each-way.
Andrea Atzeni and AROD will take all the beating in the Group 3 Diomed Stakes at 3.10pm. Once considered a Derby horse, he ran a cracker in the Lockinge Stakes when third to Night of Thunder and this trip looks ideal. I can see him free-wheeling round Tattenham Corner and it will take a good one to beat him here.
There’s another tough handicap in the Investec Mile at 3.45pm. ZUGZWANG is up 6lb having been beaten last time, but the drop in distance might help him. He’s in form and getting better all the time. He’s worth an each-way look under Jamie Spencer for Ed de Giles.
Finally, the Oaks is at 4.30pm, and I want to take on the 1,000 Guineas winner Legatissimo. You hear me Paddy?
The one I like each-way is Chester winner DIAMONDSANDRUBIES who has been gagging for this step up in distance all her life.
Take some stopping
She was beaten second time out this season – but that was over shorter and she was staying on well. I really think she’s going to take some stopping. She has a good attitude and plenty of talent.
So best of luck on Oaks day and I hope we bang in a winner or two. I’ll be back tomorrow for the Derby preview. Yeeehaaa!
