It’s all about who has the most room to improve as the first of the mid-season Classics comes under starter’s orders on Friday with the Investec Oaks.
The panel have fixed on the Irish challengers as the most likely winners of the Fillies Classic with Matt Chapman cocksure (when’s he not?) that he’s got the beating of the trader’s fancy and big-race fav Legatissimo with Diamonsandrubies while Paddy & Turftalk Tom have both gone for unexposed-at-this-trip-type, Jack Naylor.
Legatissimo sets the standard but last month’s 1000 Guineas winner has been given the coffin draw in box one at Epsom and will have to overcome some statistical negatives – as well as any traffic problems – if she’s going to become the first filly to do the double since Frankie Dettori steered Kassia home in 2002.
With some tricky races on the under-card and a going forecast that’s more fluid than Papiss Cisse’s love life – it’s winners we want as we freewheel towards the Epsom Derby on Saturday.
