The July meeting at Newmarket is always a thing of joy. I was once booked Darryll Holland to win the July Cup on Continent but that’s as close as I came to experiencing big-race success.
Now, though, my joy comes from making Paddy poorer, so let’s see if we can sort out some of today’s TV races. You hear me Paddy?
Let’s start with the 7f fillies’ handicap at 2.10pm, and many will want to lump on the unbeaten Wordcraft. However, I think an each-way wager on ALFAJER is the way to go here.
Trained by Marco Botti, Alfajer is now 5lb better off with Wordcraft having been beaten by that rival last time at Kempton. That beings Martin Harley’s ride right into the mix at better odds.
It’s the 6f Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at 2.40pm, and we’re dealing with lightly raced horses open to lots of improvement so a bit of a guessing game.
Eastern Angel and Illuminate may well dominate after their excellent performances at Royal Ascot, and it’s the latter I like here. ILLUMINATE is proven at 6f, and she ran right to the line in the Albany. She could be very decent for champions Hannon and Hughes.
Next up is the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes over 1m at 3.15pm. The one I want to lump on here is French raider BAWINA. She’s closely matched with Avenir Certain on more than one bit of form, but the Maxime Guyon-ridden selection is more progressive now and while she has a bit to find with Integral on form, the latter has disappointed this season. Let’s hope the selection is tres bien!
Finally we have the 20-runner 6f handicap at 3.45pm, and this looks a complete nightmare and the kind of race Paddy would think we would do our conkers so he’s going Money Back as a free bet with the 2nd and 3rd placed horses.
However, despite going up 3lb for a defeat last time I think we’ll get a right old run from the Charlie Hills-trained MAGICAL MEMORY who is ridden by Ryan Moore.
This offspring of Zebedee stays 6f well and is improving all the time. Obviously this is tough, but his credentials are screaming at me. So I’ll have a few quid on each-way.
So here we go on this blog for this week. I’ll be back again on Friday for Saturday’s congested cards. But like being stuck in traffic with a model in the car next to you – you don’t worry about congestion if you have a winner or two. Yeeehaaa!
