This blog comes into its own on a minefield like Saturday – we have the chance to single out one or two events that are worth a special look!
Hopefully, once I’ve done that, we can make Paddy miserable with a few winners. I like a sad Paddy. You hear me Paddy?
Let’s start at Ascot with the Summer Mile at 2.45pm. Without doubt the class acts here are Toormore and Arod, although whether the former is truly deserving of his rating is open to question. I love Arod. But I feel he’s best at a little over a mile.
So I will take a chance on CABLE BAY, who might get strong gallop here with both Arod and Bow Creek keen to lead. Olivier Peslier is a good booking for the Charlie Hills-trained selection.
Big betting heat
At York I want to check out the Listed City Walls Stakes at 2.55pm, and the one I like here is BOOM THE GROOM, who on official ratings has a bit to find. However, there will be a silly pace here, and he could quite easily come through later for Tony Carroll and Luke Morris.
Also at York is the big betting heat of the John Smith’s Cup at 3.25pm, and having backed him at Royal Ascot when second I’m sticking with AJMAN BRIDGE for Luca Cumani and Adam Kirby.
This consistent five-year-old might be better drawn, but there should be a strong gallop to run at and dropping from 1m 4f with these conditions is ideal. Hard to keep him out the frame.
I’ve also taken a look at a couple of races at Newmarket, so let’s start with the nightmare Bunbury Cup at 3.10pm. In a tricky heat I’ll have a few quid each-way on RELATED, who might prefer 6f rather than 7f but is in good form and is still a three-time winner over this trip. Tom Marquand takes off a useful 5lb.
Finally, the big sprint of the day for purists is the Group 1 Darley July Cup at 3.45pm. I’m confident the Aussie raider BRAZEN BEAU will prove far too good after a fine second at Royal Ascot.
James Doyle’s mount is all speed and class and the home defence is not strong.
So here we go. An ultra-tough day. Let’s hope for a few Yeeehaaas!
