Christian Benteke’s big money move to Liverpool has seen him become more popular than the man in the bar who knows ‘the secret code’ for the office tab. Paddy Power punters are smashing into Benteke for next season’s Golden Boot award, with the new Liverpool striker’s price coming in from 20/1 to 14/1.
The bookmaker has seen strong market support for the striker, with 23 per cent of the money behind Benteke to be top scorer – only equalled by Manchester United frontman Wayne Rooney.
Surprisingly, Premier League flop Radamel Falcao has seen steady backing, with 10 per cent of the cash, suggesting punters are anticipating a goal-scoring revival at Chelsea, under Jose Mourinho.
Less surprisingly, last season’s hot strikers’ Alexis Sanchez (9 per cent), Diego Costa (8 per cent), and Sergio Aguero (8 per cent) all remain popular in the betting.
Paddy Power said: ‘Escaping from Villa seems to have boosted punters’ confidence in Benteke, and rightly so with the likes of Henderson and Firmino now providing assists. I’m surprised about support for Falcao though – you can’t polish a turd, as they say.’
