Matt Chapman: Romsdal can bounce back to winning ways at Newbury as we rev up for York

by Matt Chapman | August 14, 2015

A big week of racing coming up at York’s four-day festival next week and I’m pumped for what should be the race of the season when Golden Horn and Gleneagles clash in the Juddmonte International.

We’ll need a few winners to build the bank so I’m turning to Newbury, Ripon and Newmarket on Saturday to smash up Paddy. You hear me big fella?

Let’s start at Newbury with the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer over an extended 1m 5f at 2.35pm. This looks a great chance for Godolphin’s ROMSDAL to get back to winning ways, after tough runs behind Snow Sky at Royal Ascot and Postponed in the King George. The opposition here is far inferior and he should score.

There’s a 7f handicap at Newbury at 3.10pm, and I originally liked Redvers who now doesn’t run so I’m switching to BEACH BAR to give us a run at double -digit odds. He’s won on soft ground before and won at Ffos Las on his second-last start.

Also at Newbury I’ve checked out the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes over 7f at 3.45pm, and it’s a really good renewal. HERE COMES WHEN should get in the mix having been beaten just under four lengths by Solow at Goodwood last time. He has YorNewbury form as well for Andrew Balding after running a big one in the Lockinge. Looks sure to fill the places at worst.

At Newmarket I want to be with ROOSSEY in the 6f handicap at 2.50pm, who ran a cracker last time at the track behind Magical Memory. William Haggas’s charge has gone up 3lb for that effort, but if repeating the run should go very well.

And my last selection today is at Ripon. The big sprint at 3.30pm is the Great St Wilfrid. SHORE STEP is in the grip of the handicapper, but has run eight consecutive cracking races and must run a big one once again. Obviously have a few quid on each-way for the Mick Channon stable.

So best of luck today and let’s hope for a Yeeehaaa or two next week I will be back for York. Oh yes.
