There have certainly been a few shocks this week at York, and that will have suited Paddy just fine. However, I still intend to come out on top by the end of the week. You hear me Paddy?
On Friday we start with the 1m 4f handicap at 1.55. The interesting one for me is the Sir Michael Stoute-trained TOP TUG. He’s been kept to racing over mainly 1m 2f recently, but has two perfectly decent runs over 1m 4f to his name. Frankie Dettori is a good booking, and a mark of 92 is workable in this narrow handicap event.
It’s the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup at 2.30pm over the extended two miles and all the big staying guns are pointed at the prize once again. BIG ORANGE has been the surprise package of the season and won well at Goodwood.
I see no reason why he won’t get an uncontested lead here and if so, he’ll be hard to peg back for Jamie Spencer and ding dong Michael Bell.
Next it’s the Listed City of York Stakes over 7f at 3.05pm, and the one to be on here is Hugo Palmer’s SHORT SQUEEZE.
He was given a cracking ride by Pat Smullen to win at this fixture 12 months ago, and while that was in handicap company he’s run well at this level the last twice. A strong gallop will be on here, and his stamina could be crucial.
Finally, it’s the Group 1 Nunthorpe over 5f at 3.40pm. All eyes will be on the American juvenile Acapulco, who landed the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot. She way well win, but her odds are cramped and I like Paddy’s family dual Nunthorpe hero SOLE POWER to hit the frame at least.
He ran well over 6f last time in the July Cup, and we all know that distance is a furlong too far. It’s just lovely taking Paddy’s cash with his own horse. We’ve done it ion the past so let’s hope we can do it again.
So best of luck to you all. What I want are Yeeehaaas!
