WWE Summerslam 2015: The top five moments in Summerslam history

Sit back, relax, and enjoy as we count down the top five WWE Summerslam moments

by Josh Powell | August 20, 2015

Summerslam 2015 is here, and while you can read all about the form and trends going into the main event between Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker here, and you can find out where Paddy Power punters are putting their cash here, we thought it would be rude not to do some classic reminiscing.

We’ve scoured the history books to pull out the top five Summerslam moments for you to enjoy while you skive work/hop on the bus/or are killing time in the loo. Agree or disagree? Have your say in the comments section. For now soak up these classic Summerslam matches.

5. Randy Orton cashes in (2013)

The beard is here! Well, it was. Daniel Bryan delighted fans in 2013 by beating John Cena in the main event to become World Heavyweight Champion for the first time. Special guest referee Triple H called it down the middle and everything was right with the world. That was before Randy Orton arrived on the scene with his Money In The Bank contract. A shock pedigree later and Daniel Bryan’s title reign was over as The Game turned heel, and The Alliance was born.

4. A 454-day reign ends (1988)

The Honky Tonk Man had held the Intercontinental Title for nearly 15 months, yet it took just 31 seconds to dethrone him. With no opponent to face at Summerslam, The Honky Tonk Man declared he didn’t care who he wrestled, he just wanted a match. Then The Ultimate Warrior’s music hit. Three right hands, a slam, a flying shoulder charge, a clothesline and a splash. That was all she wrote. The Honky Tonk Man never reclaimed his gold.

3. Kurt Angle gets screwed (2001)

At Invasion, Stone Cold Steve Austin betrayed the entire WWE by siding with Shane and Stephanie McMahon and Team WCW. That thrust him into a fierce rivalry with Kurt Angle at Summerslam and led to one of the bloodiest and greatest matches at the PPV. Kurt Angle was busted open early as Austin tried everything to put him away. Angle, with the crowd fully behind him, managed to kick out of an incredible three Stone Cold Stunners and Austin lost the plot. He attacked three referees before Angle caught him with the Angle Slam. As it looked like Angle would become the new Champion a WCW official ran out to the ring, and rather than making the count, disqualified Stone Cold ensuring that he retained his belt.

‘Kurt Angle got screwed, God dammit’. JR summed it up perfectly.

2. A family affair (1992)

Intercontinental Champion Bret Hart took on the challenger, and his brother-in-law, British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith in a sold out Wembley Arena in 1992. The crowd was fully aware of the significance behind the match and the family ties, plus they weren’t shy in making it known who they were cheering on. In one of the greatest Summerslam matches of all time, The British Bulldog countered a sunset flip to record the pin and send the crowd crazy. After a brief moment of hesitation, Hart congratulated Davey Boy and the two were joined in the ring by Bret’s sister, and the Bulldog’s wife, Diana Hart. There are fireworks and Lennox Lewis flies the union Jack. Unbelievable scenes.

1. Tables, Ladders and Chairs. Oh my! (2000)

The birth of the TLC match came at Summerslam 2000 when Edge and Christian took on The Dudley Boyz and The Hardy Boyz for the Tag Team Titles. All six men put their bodies on the line in a heart-stopping match which had massive bumps galore. There were numerous hard chair shots throughout the 15 minute bout and plenty of superstars took a few ladders to the jaws. Bubba Ray went off a ladder through four tables, Edge took a 3D through a table, Jeff Hardy performed a 20 foot Swanton Bomb that went horribly wrong, Matt Hardy took a huge bump to the outside and his missus Lita then was on the end of a crunching spear from Edge.

If you’re looking for 15 minutes of absolute fun and destruction, feast your eyes on the above.
