A mixture of top class Group races and some tricky handicaps are up for grabs this Saturday as well a bit of jumps action – and I’m up for the challenge. Who wouldn’t be when the reward is making fat Paddy a miserable tubby Paddy? You hear me Paddy?
I’m kicking off at Market Rasen with the Listed handicap hurdle at 2.15pm over an extended 2m. GRAN MAESTRO goes well here and has run well on the Flat since scoring over hurdles last time. Will Kennedy is riding really well, and while Broughton is more obvious I will take a chance.
There’s a Listed Handicap Chase at Market Rasen at 2.50pm, and the one I like here is OSCAR ROCK, who has definitely got the ability to land this prize if fit after a layoff and if his jumping holds up!
So, there are plenty of ifs there, but Oscar Rock is talented, and there is no doubt Malcolm Jefferson can get one ready. Fingers crossed.
Right, that’s the jumps racing, but what about the Flat? It’s the Group 1 Cheveley Park at 2.35pm, and the one for me is the mega tough BESHARAH for William Haggas.
This filly was better than ever at York last time, and while I expect Lumiere to be closer I can’t see a change in the placings from that last effort. Lump on.
At 3.10pm it’s the Group 1 Middle Park. Shalaa will be long odds on, and is hard to oppose. I spoke to John Gosden Friday morning in Newmarket and he loves this colt. Should just win, although Buratino will give him a race.
Finally it’s the big betting race, the Cambridgeshire, at 3.50pm, and the one I like is the up-in-trip Irish raider PORTAGE. This 3yo is open to lots of improvement for a top trainer in Michael Halford and will be hard to keep out the frame if progressing a little more.
So it’s a tough Saturday, but equally we know if we have a winner it will be at decent odds. So get ready to pay Paddy! Yeeehaaa!
