Manchester United have had an up and down season. They’re playing the type of football that makes you fantasise about a night out with Katie Hopkins, but they were getting results. They’ve had three back to back 0-0 draws and their time in Europe has been shite. A win against Wolfsburg that didn’t look overly convincing was sandwiched between a loss away to PSV and a draw away to CSKA Moscow.
The great one that was Sir Alex Ferguson always said that it was your home form that gets you through the group stages. United need to start picking up points if they are to have any hope of going through. CSKA Moscow travel to Manchester on Tuesday and after a draw the first meeting between the sides United need the win.
United’s home form over the last five years in the Champions League has been good if not spectacular. A 65 percent win rate from 20 games and they’ve only lost twice. 37 goals in those 20 games works out at 1.85 goals a game so you can expect goals. While Memphis Depay has been as useful as Peyton Manning in the league he has been slightly better in the Champions League. A punt to hit the onion bag at any time looks like as promising as a 4-in-1 after a night on the ale.
Anthony Martial has been the shining light in a team that makes the X-Factor look appealing, but one goal in 10 games will have Louis Van Gaal sweating worse than David Cameron in a pig sanctuary. His last goal did come in the Champions League against Moscow and a punt on the Frenchman to bag first is the safest bet.
United have scored an average of 1.61 goals in their 18 games so far this season and only conceded 0.56. So obviously we have a goal fest on our hands. That 7-7 our twitter team keeps raving on about is coming. In all likelihood this will be a typical Van Gaal performance. Shite for most of the game with a moment of brilliance/luck to win it. The smart money would go towards Martial. A 1-0 win with the Frenchman to bag first is 20/1 and well worth a flutter.
