Former friends, turned bitter enemies. It’s a classic WWE storyline and one that has rocked the Divas division in recent weeks.
Two-time WWE Divas Champ Paige had held the belt for a combined 119 days, but she hasn’t worn gold for almost 16 months thanks to the dominance of Nikki Bella. Nikki’s title reign of 301 days was the longest in the title’s history, but that came to an end thanks to Paige’s partner and fan favourite, Charlotte, at Night of Champions on September 20.
Since then the green eye of envy has become too much for Paige and her target is locked on destroying the daughter of legend Ric Flair at Survivor Series. She’s even gone as far as taking cheap jibes at Charlotte’s brother Reid who died of an overdose in 2013. This thing has got very personal.
The stats suggest there is very little to separate two of the best competitors in the Diva division right now. Charlotte comes into the match with 46 wins from 66 matches on TV or PPV (69.7 per cent), while the more experienced Paige’s win rate is only marginally lower at 62.4 per cent (93 wins in 149 matches).
They’ve faced off against each other twice before, but not since May 2014, and both matches were team events. That’s where the biggest clue to picking Sunday’s winner may lie. In singles action Paige’s win rate rises ever so slightly to 68 per cent, but Charlotte’s skyrockets to 85.4 per cent. In 41 individual matches she has only ever been beaten six times, and one-on-one she hasn’t lost since July when Bayley beat her in NXT. Paige on the other hand has lost four of her last five one-on-one bouts and comes into Sunday’s PPV in worse form than Newcastle United.
Survivor Series history also gives a minor nudge towards Charlotte retaining her title. In 11 Divas Championship matches at the PPV, the Champ has held on to her belt 55 per cent of the time.
Charlotte is the clear favourite according to our wrestling trader, who has the champ priced up at to retain her belt. Paige might be convinced that the ring is her house, but the lads in Power Tower have other ideas and have the Anti-Diva as the outsider.
