The last time Liverpool beat Manchester City 4-1 away from home, New Kids On The Block were number one, Maggie Thatcher was Prime Minister and the original Nintendo Game Boy was the must have Christmas present. It was December 1989 while King Kenny Dalglish was at the Liverpool helm, and even the most passionate Kloppites would have struggled to envisage a similar performance at the Etihad Stadium last Saturday.
But that’s exactly what happened, and at 500/1 for Liverpool to win 4-1 and Philippe Coutinho to score first, two Paddy Power punters delightfully scooped the loot. One punter from West Yorkshire, and another from County Down in Northern Ireland pocketed £500 each just in time for Christmas, as they both nailed one of the biggest upsets of the season.
Eliaquim Mangala turned the ball into his own net inside 10 minutes as Jurgen Klopp’s side flew out of the blocks. Own goals don’t count in the first goalscorer market – so it was Philippe Coutinho’s strike after 23 minutes that lit up the scorecast bet for these two guys.
The second half of the brilliant Brazilian duo Roberto Firmino added a third just after the half hour mark as Liverpool threatened to run riot over Manchester City in their own back yard. A half-fit Sergio Aguero was still able to produce a moment of individual brilliance to pull one back for the Citizens before the break, but at the oranges both punters were sitting pretty with Liverpool 3-1 ahead.
It was a nervy 35 minutes for both guys, holding out for a final Liverpool stike, and it came from the unlikely boot of centre-back Martin Skrtel. The defender swiveled on a half-volley like a seasoned striker with nine minutes to go to not only put an emphatic exclamation mark on the Reds’ win, but also click a hugely unlikely 500/1 scorecast.
It was Christmas come early for Liverpool fans on Saturday night, and even more so for the two punters who were able to wine and dine on £500 courtesy of Paddy Power. A place in the Punting Hall of Fame is all yours.
