Ruby Walsh: Black Hercules looks my best ride at Navan and I hope I’ve called it right on Felix Yonger

by Ruby Walsh | December 14, 2015

I was glad I didn’t have to call this yesterday but I’ve gone for Felix Yonger at Navan today in the rearranged Grade Two Hilly Way Chase.

But I’m still not 100 per cent sure. There’s no doubt Felix Yonger is the better horse but this heavy ground will blunt his speed while Twinlight revels in it.

Both have definitely come on for their seasonal bow and with just the five runners you could make a case for all of them.

Hidden Cyclone comes here after unseating behind Djakadam in the John Durkan Memorial Chase. Going left-handed suits him well. He’s also never been beaten at Navan when he’s completed the course and Bright New Dawn and Days Hotel are fair horses too.

I’m hoping I’ve called it right – but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see any of these winning this race and it could come down to whoever handles the conditions best.

Felix Younger

I ride Side Saddle in the 12.00 for Sandra Hughes who has bombed in a couple of bumpers but was fifth in a a maiden hurdle at Fairyhouse last season and a couple of winner have come out of that race. On bumper form Gordon Elliot’s Whistling Dixie looks the one to beat but I’m hoping mine has an each-way chance.

Miss Dinamic
is very consistent and gutsy. She’s been running on quicker ground throughout the Summer and Autumn but whether she’s as effective on heavy ground we just don’t know yet.  She’ll have to be as Perfect Woman is on an unbelievable run and is improving rapidly.

Black Hercules seems to be going really well at home and has won first time up every season. It’s a decent Beginners’ Chase with All Hell Let Loose and Fine Article who should improve for his debut run over fences.

We like Black Hercules and think he could be a graded horse in time and can hopefully get off to a winning start over fences.

Avenie D’Une Vie was beaten by Our Duke on his debut and that one was second yesterday behind Death Duty yesterday. But Patrick (Mullins) thinks he’s improved since then, he’s been working better and should go a lot closer today to recouping losses. It could be a match between him and Gigginstown’s other runner Delegate .
