Ruby Walsh: A magic trio of rides for Ruby and a look at Willie Mullins’ Leopardstown runners

by Ruby Walsh | December 29, 2015

12.45 – Maiden Hurdle

I think the step up in trip will suit Call It Magic today. It was a steadily run race in Navan and even though I was on the pace I probably wasn’t going fast enough. With that said I think he has to improve a good bit on his run to beat Space Cadet, who was second to Up For Review at Fairyhouse. I expect him to have a really good race and hopefully he’s improved enough to give Space Cadet a really good run.

  • Ruby’s Ride: Call It Magic –
  • 1.20 – Mares Hurdle

A Willie Mullins forecast isn’t out of the question here but Rock On The Moor isn’t a bad mare either. It’s not a big field but it’s a competitive race. Morning Run is coming back from a lay-off and 2 & 1/2 is about as far as she’s run. She’s a free going mare who likes to get on with her business. Niall Kelly who rides her out every morning is happy with her. We think she’s good and fit, she’s a good mare and we hope she can continue on her winning way. The lay-off is the only big worry on such testing ground but she’s in good form. Whiteout has been very consistent, winning her last time out at Punchestown. It’s a very competitive race but if Morning Run brings her A-game she’ll be very hard to beat.

    1.55 – Novice Chase

I was quite taken with, obviously No More Heroes, but I was also taken with how Monksland ran considering he had run the week before in Gowran Park. If he improves on his jumping he’ll get closer to No More Heroes but the step up to 3 miles is going to suit No More Heroes better and though it’s a great race I think he’ll come out on top.

    2.30 – Hurdle (Grade 1)

Identity Thief is a very improved horse, he and Nichols Canyon like to race on the pace so this won’t be a muddling contest. Obviously Plinth would have to improve dramatically on what he’s done but Windsor Park beat Nichols Canyon in the Neptune Novices Hurdle last year. He was second to him in the Deloitte and in front of Identity Thief in that race. He’s no forlorn hope. We’re very happy with Nichols Canyon, he’s doing things right at home and working as well as he ever does. He should handle the heavy ground and I hope he takes all the beating.

  • Ruby’s Ride: Nichols Canyon –
  • 3.40 – Bumper

Lucky Pass won a bumper when most of Willie’s bumper horses were shaping like they needed a run yet this guiy was capable of winning. Which is a good sign and he should have improved a good bit from that. He’ll be hard to beat today.
