Matt Chapman: This 14/1 shot looks a Classic bet to me on Saturday lads

by Matt Chapman | January 15, 2016

The PP blog smashed it out the ball park once again last weekend with 9/1 winner Mountainous in the Welsh National forming part of a 23/1 double. Take that Paddy. You hear me?

So let’s go to war again this weekend again on a tricky day of handicaps mainly as we count down to Cheltenham.

I want to start with the 3m novices’ chase at Warwick 1.50pm where Paul Nicholls-trained SILSOL looks the one to be on. He should be reasonable odds with Willie Mullins’ Black Hercules in the line-up who although looks a machine, Silsol has plenty of talent as well and can carry a penalty to success.

The 2.25pm at Warwick is a handicap hurdle qualifier over 3m2f, and the improving ISAACTOWN LAD can keep up winning ways for trainer Nicky Richards. He just gets better and better and has every chance.

There’s a novices’ hurdle at Warwick at 3.00pm and I’m a huge fan of Dan Skelton’s BORN SURVIVOR who faces the biggest test of his career after winning a maiden hurdle over course and distance last time.

I will take the risk that he’s as good as I think.

The feature chase at Warwick and we need another Mountainous type to get home over the 3m 5f trip.

I’m going with RED DEVIL LADS (3.35pm) who unseated early on in the Welsh National. He’s a young, improving stayer and might be good enough to land this event if over those exertions.

At Wetherby, SIR VALENTINO (2.05pm) looks the one to be on but was out of his depth last time against Sprinter Sacre in a Grade two Chase at Kempton  but prior to that was in great form for Tom George and can get back on the winning trail.

The handicap hurdle over nearly 2m 4f is worth having a few quid each-way on MAXIE T (2.40pm) for Micky Hammond. This runner loves heavy ground and is in form in what is a tough race to call.

Finally, for all weather fans there’s a  1m 2f handicap at Chelmsford. I’m all over the improving LUV U WHATEVER (3.20pm) who in usual circumstances would be one to take on. However, he’s a proven stayer and will go from the front. Mick Appleby is in tremendous form and he should be hard to catch.

So best of luck once again this weekend. Let’s bang in some more Yeeehaaas.
