ICYMI: The hype train derailed for Sage Northcutt at UFC New Jersey

A mini-McGregor? Not quite for UFC's poster boy

by David Kent | January 31, 2016

At just 19, Sage Northcutt is probably one of the youngest UFC fighters around. But, being so young and being American, the hype around him ahead of his fight last night at UFC New Jersey was incredible. Looking at the media, no one really thought about him losing, and this was to be his next step on a road to a lightweight title shot.

Just one problem. Bryan Barberena doesn’t look at the media.

Northcutt did catch him early on in the first round with a right.

But in a big shock, Northcutt tapped out to a right arm triangle choke, despite Barberena seemingly not having the hold fully appplied.

Northcutt gave up quicker than Man United fans in the first half of matches, and the hype train around him has come off it’s tracks for the time being.
